History & Story

The Staircase - Rising Through the Historic Core of the House

Rising through the historic core of the house, the staircase links the ceremonial entrance with the more private chambers once used by judges, clerks, servants, and visiting officials. Its position was carefully chosen: visible enough to impress visitors, yet practical enough to control movement through the building.

The staircase was built in 1716 as part of the restoration and formalisation of the front elevation. Today, it invites visitors to move through Stone Court House as generations before them once did, rising from the formal world of justice into the quieter rooms where daily life unfolded.

Personal Restoration Note

The staircase became one of the places where we felt the different lives of the house most strongly. As repairs revealed older fabric and later changes, it reminded us that Stone Court House had never stood still. Each generation had moved through it, altered it, and left something behind.
